In the past I just used YouTube auto-play, but increasingly it's just filled with sad AI slop (same goes for Spotify).

The last two weeks have been quite stressful (unrelated to work). Depicting the icon of old times -- a cassette tape -- is pure nostalgia for me and I enjoyed every second of it regardless of the aspect of helping out GNOME app developers. Or the usual -- sketch friday, time for some app icon sketches.

GNOME 49 Beta 1 has been released a week ago, and new features, as well as bug fixes and general desktop and shell improvements, have landed to this beta test version. However, there was a long-awaited feature request that has finally been implemented years after.

A merge request (or pull request for those used to GitHub) has been made to the GNOME Shell project in the GitLab server. In 2024, the music player controls was one of the most requested features at the time, with bug reports dating back to 2018 (GNOME Shell #488) when GNOME 3.28 was the latest version.

The GNOME Shell, starting from GNOME 49 Beta 1, now has earned this long-awaited feature, which makes it easier for you to control the music player, even if it’s a radio station. Apps that support Media Player Remote Interfacing Specification (MPRIS), such as Shortwave and Audacious, can now have their media control placed at the bottom of your lock screen, which increases productivity.

Hello, friends. I've been known as "Newfangled" on Twitch and just did a re-brand of my channel. It's now called "Positive Notes" which is the name of both the channel and the show.

I'm no longer calling myself "Newfangled", but using my first given name (Dallin) as the host of my new show. So I figured I'd stop using my Newfangled account over on Universeodon and start using this account that I've had for a while but never used much.

As part of the #BuyFromEU movement, we will personally try to listen to more music from Europe, especially from other European countries other than our own, but we need suggestions.

What if we did this together? This can help us discover a lot of nice music from our European friends. 😀 🇪🇺

So we thought it might be nice to create themed playlists with songs from different European artists.

Instead of letting the algorithm of your music streaming app decide our weekly recommendations based on paid content from record labels, the random recommendations of the Mastodon community could expand our musical horizons and help boosting European music. 🎻

Each week we could define a theme (e.g. music for a rainy day, songs with clever lyrics, etc.) and invite everyone to recommend a European song that fits the theme. We would collect the suggestions and create a public playlist somewhere (where?).

To decide on weekly themes, we could make polls a week in advance and on a certain day everyone would submit their song suggestions.

I finally got around around to re-writing my badly outdated intro after a full year

Hi Fediiiii I'm Octavia, a trans-fem Japanese and USian bard, violinist, streamer, and vtuber who uses her classical training to play all of the wonderful soundtracks that exist in the world

Games, anime, movies, visual novels, and any other sort of soundtrack I can get my hands on are in my repertoire I stream on Youtube and Twitch and spend the time introducing people to soundtracks and taking soundtrack requests

Over the last 1.5 years, I've also dealt with long covid, which makes my stamina 20% of what it used to be, alongside making everything cost more and recover slower, which has been a frustrating journey, and I've become nearly unable to do in-person performances because even the travel is exhausting I'm also AuDHD, and always have the specter of repetitive stress injuries looking over my shoulders

On Fedi, I tend to talk about games, manga, trans-fem stuff, and streaming, as well as heavier topics like transphobia, transmisogyny, and racism (my boosts tend to be slightly wider in topics, including appropriately CW'd lewd material and artists (and if you want just my posts, you can set the option to not see my boosts~))

So what's going on with this instance? Is this my "main" presence or am I still on shellsharks.social? Fair question. The answer is, yes! This is a #GoToSocial instance, on a new fun, shiny, vanity domain. If it works out, I might end up moving all my activity over here and shutting down the Mastodon instance I have at shellsharks.social. Until then, I'm operating out of both spaces. This also means that for now, I haven't migrated my followers (or followed accounts) over here, so don't be offended if I haven't followed you back yet! I don't want to knock this fairly low-spec'ed instance over so I'm taking it slow with how I am using it.

Why am I doing this? Well for one main reason really, I wanted an instance where I could post more than 500 characters at a time. GtS gives me that, and much more. Bonus points for A. being less resource intensive than Mastodon (so cheaper to run), B. more customizable and C. I could get an even more ridiculous vanity domain.

Ancient Stones from The Elder Scrolls Skyrim (composed by Jeremy Soule) is a piece that anybody who has played Skyrim will recognise, and it's been one of my favourites ever since I first played it, but for the longest time, it didn't feel like I could play it A few months ago, I ended up having enough energy to make a proper solo arrangement of this (as opposed to the piano and ensemble scores available out there), and luckily, that seemed to be the key that made this playable for me

I adore it so much that people that are frequently at my youtube streams probably hear it nearly every stream, and it felt like it was at a point where I could give it its own video

hi, everyone! while I post quite a bit about other topics, my real passion is making electronic music! I don't confine myself to any sort of box, and anything I've released typically changes genres from track to track. that said, my main influences include electro-industrial, synthwave, instrumental hip-hop, dance-rock, sound collage, the more psychedelic end of prog-rock, and spoken-word artists like Kae Tempest and Laurie Anderson.

at this time, I have three releases available on my Bandcamp:

nonbinaural is my debut full-length, mostly featuring tracks composed while I was recovering from some pretty heavy trauma in 2022. despite the circumstances surrounding the music, others have called it an expression of trans joy - which I guess it is, in retrospect 😂​

eclipse is an EP released in between the two full albums that consists of material that's darker, more experimental, and more spoken-word-heavy than nonbinaural.

the ghost fetish is my most recent release, having just dropped on March 1. contrasting with the previous two, it's a mostly instrumental album, touching primarily upon themes of anxiety and climate catastrophe.

Also on the subject of this year's music, I have made an end-of-year playlist, of some songs what I liked from 2023. As it was such a good year for music I enjoy, it's an awfully long playlist, a trifle over three hours.

There've been years in the past when I've struggled to get much beyond one hour, so three hours is a lot for me.

Even then, there was a lot that I missed out - nothing on here from Erland Cooper, Lila Tirando a Violeta, Erin Hopes, Craven Faults, all of whom made records that I loved.

It was a bit of a hack, but I got PiMP to work on this dreaded infotainment system using Bluetooth. I couldn't use the Raspberry Pi's onboard Bluetooth controller to stream A2DP audio, so a dongle was necessary. I still can't control volume from the knob, but I'm working on a workaround. Infotainment systems found in new cars are functionally restrictive and suffer from poor usability. The worst is the discontinuation of auxiliary ports, which would allow you to use something independent of such a system. FM transmitters just don't cut it.

I've since resorted to using a USB speaker with my Raspberry Pi to resolve this problem. It is a ridiculous arrangement, but I have reclaimed control of music playback in my car. 🤯

@viralvulpes performed this gorgeous rendition of Someone Like You a while back, and from the night I heard it, it made me want to record parts for it, but my recording equipment was scattered at the time. Fast forward to a few nights ago when I set everything back up, and then last night when I did trouble-shooting, arranging, recording, and mixing ​ ​

Aside from adding a bit of violin to the piece, I also did some EQing and a couple of minor effects to both bring out what was already gorgeous about Fox's recording as well as help blend the two tracks together (having different recording environments and equipment is a royal pain for this ​ )

After sending him the finished file, he also gave me permission to post it here for you to hear. I hope I've done the Fox's original justice ​ ​

I'm a disabled lesbian trans woman from the north-west of England. I'm totally blind and have cerebral palsy. I possibly neurodivergent in some form or other as well but haven't been diagnosed.
I've been happily married for nearly 7 years at the time of writing. My wife doesn't do much on social media so I usually don't mention her name in public posts.
of my interests include:
Music, both playing and listening. I play keyboards, drums and bass. I love synthesisers and learning how to program my own patches on the ones that are accessible to me. I have a fairly eclectic music taste and favourite genres include pop, soul, R&B, rock, electronic music and others. It's probably easier to say what I don't like.
reading. mainly fantacy and sci-fi but I'll give most things a go if the blurb grabs me.
Technology interests me, but mainly as an end user rather than messing about with servers and stuff like that, although I have done a bit of coding. One tech thing I am fascinated by though is speech synthesisers.
Accessibility is of course important to me, and I've been known to go on rants about that. I'm a full-time screen reader user. NVDA on windows and VoiceOver on iOS.

I'm Matt, an artist and musician based in Toronto/Tkaronto. I work in and around computation, thinking about its histories, politics, culture, and computation-as-material. My main efforts right now are around computational poetics, expanded sculpture, and net art. I believe computers could be something different in the world, and try to embody that in my work and life.

I make music mainly as New Tendencies, but sometimes under other names and used to play in a number of punk/post-punk bands in addition to my more experimental/electronic/computer music and sound art. I also have a very very small label/press called <blink>.

I live with my partner of over 20 years and a 10 year old Bengal cat named Iggy (because she's a real wild child).

My online life goes back to around 1992 when I started calling BBS's, and running one... then soon after getting an internet connection and basically living on IRC where I got into the demo/tracker scene and started making computer music.

Also love sci-fi, video games, Hackers (1995), bad reality tv, cocktails...
